David suffers from some verbals from his wife . Goes to work only to find he's lost his job . On his way home he receives a phone call from his wife that she's changed the locks on the doors and wants a divorce . A bad day for David just gets worse when he realises the apocalypse has just struck
In some ways you've got to admire the producers behind DYSTOPIA 2013 who have decided to make a movie without any budget . They get around the real problem of portraying an apocalypse by alluding to it via the title sequence then cutting to David wandering around as a survivor with the audience left to join up the dots as to what has happened
The unfortunate thing is that being an American film the producers are trying to emulate MAD MAX as if that's the only role model for post apocalyptic fiction . Big mistake . Britain has a long heritage of this type of speculative fiction with novelists such as John Wyndham and John Christopher . Indeed when David meets up with some protagonists and one of them is a convicted criminal you're reminded of THE DEATH OF GRASS , but for some reason DYSTOPIA is trying to be an action adventure movie and if you don't have the budget for it then you can't afford to make the convincing action scenes needed for it
I don't like to be too negative for film makers who get off their backside and don't let a lack of budget stop them from pursuing their dreams but I'm often reminded of the constant fundamental problems when someone does this , namely having a screenplay that tries too hard to enthral the audience and having a cast who are very wooden . This type of premise should follow the 2009 overlooked masterpiece THE ROAD but this film ends up becoming the road to nowhere
I tend to be very nice to indy filcks, but god is this terrible, it's almost like the production crew knew nothing at all about film making, nothing.
IMDb says a budget of $150,000. I'm really hard pressed to believe that. watch a movie like primer that was shot for $7,000 and you wonder where the other $143,000 went.
No character development, terribly cinematography and effects, NOT REAL ACTORS and it goes on like this boring as all hell. If this was a side project for a kid out of highs school I would say it was a valiant effort. but if this is a serious offering from a "film maker" it gets a 3/10 from me at best.
Spoiler ALERT!! Great little low budget (Indy) Sci-fi film that asks a lot of questions (and answers them too) about humans would behave when catastrophe strikes. Maybe the Mayans have it right and this is our future.??
Some of the torture scenes are pretty vivid; scalping and removal of body parts. It is not for the faint of heart.
And we think there are crazies living in our society now?? Wait till people see the future and chaos that follows.
And, maybe like Nick's character we can still redeem ourselves in the eyes of those around us and ourself…………
Count me as a fan and hope to see this receive some accolades from film festivals her & abroad.
