Troubled loner punk Jacob (a solid and credible performance by Mitch Rumfelt) returns to his abusive father's grave in an attempt to break the curse that haunts him. Jacob finds possible salvation in the form of sweet young artist Zoe (an appealing portrayal by the pretty Aubrey Adams). Director/co-writer David Kobler eschews a standard straightforward linear narrative structure in favor of a more fractured and elliptical approach that relates the story primarily through a series of startling flashbacks and stunning images that manage to be stark, unsentimental, and above all strangely hypnotic. Moreover, the gritty everyday setting, brooding tone, and strong downbeat atmosphere further enhance this picture's dramatic impact, with a potent central message about how the terrible events of one's bad past are mighty tough to shake and hence continue to plague you in the present. The jolting moments of brutal violence pack a pretty harsh punch. Ditto the genuinely surprising and unexpected ending. Worthwhile viewing for those who want to see something different and challenging.
