Yeralti, which in Turkish means "underground', is based on Dostoyevsky's Notes from Underground. The setting has been changed from St.Petersburgh to Ankara. The protagonist, Muharram, is a failed writer now trapped in an empty and boring existence working as a civil servant and living alone. He tries to be honest to himself and others and tell people exactly what he feels. However, this non-conformity has backfired on him and he has become a recluse with no real friends and the object of ridicule by those around him. He values real friendship based on honesty and trust but not on that based on false compliments and hiding the truth. For him time passes very slowly (emphasized by long static shots) and he feels neglected and suffocated. The film, like the book, is a combination of observations (provided by Muarram in the form of voice over) and events. Yeralti is very well directed and acted and is a thought provoking film. It picked up the Best Film and Best Actor prizes at the 2012 Dubai International Film Festival.
Foremost i don't have any direct connection with director , i am just a cinephile who loves worldwide-cinema especially made by well respected director's.
As i had been waiting Zeki Demirkubuz's latest movie Yeraltı , i was a bit upset at the end. In addition to this you can still smell his chaotic vision like previous movies but this time i think he seriously got annoyed to someone and tried to say his "replies" to them via character made by Engin Günaydın.
This can't say i dislike the movie but i think Tales of Darkness trilogy or Kader is better then this or even Masumiyet. You should watch those before coming to Yeraltı i suppose. Like you ought to do with Kim Ki-Duk's movies to understand those kind of extraordinary visioneers outstanding way of looking to the cinema. I can give many examples like Haneke or von Trier even van Sant. Ki-duk is the first one came in because of my obsession on Korean cinema.
Something about Engin Günaydın , i think he was tremendously worked on constructing the character and did a great job , you would agree with me.
Frankly saying that Demirkubuz's legacy should go on , cause real-Turkish cinema audience need that kind of directors which born and raised in our very country. So then we can be more familiar to their drawings on scene not like FreakShow puppet master's works for douchebags , i mean fat-ass comedies.
By the way Zeki Demirkubuz still great , still a priceless director for Turkey.
Please watch and support his great vision , as i do for years…
Yeralti (Inside) is excellent adaptation from the novel "Notes from Underground" by Dostoyevsky. An extraordinary Turkish director Zeki Demirkubuz proves his success once again with Yeralti with a great analyzes and understanding of that kind of complicated novel and also handpicked casting.
Engin Gunaydin (a well-known comedian playing against type) performs excellent with a great passion to his alone and paranoiac character Muharrem.
Yeralti is poignant and touchy psychology-study which helps to discover the other suffering side of the life.
